Couture Adventure Part Duex?

My birthday is next month. I will be 35. I’m not a huge fan of birthdays. That has nothing to do with my age and everything to do with the incredibly shitty ones I had as a kid. Though the bdays have improved drastically as a wife and mom, I am still somewhat reluctant to make an event out of them. For fear of…I don’t know what really. I think I still tend to restrain my emotions due to some long held fear of….something.

Well, I enjoyed my recent dressmaking experience so much (thanks for your kind words!! I will try to get better at replying to those much appreciated comments!) that I’ve been trying to think of another reason or occasion to indulge and completely disregarded my birthday as an option.
But, why?

The bug to bone (PUN!) has been reawakened (with a vengeance, please help me refrain from ordering that beading tool) by viewing some spectacular examples of couture artistry in motion via that most excellent medium, YouTube.
Look at all of this deliciousness and tell me you don’t want to spend weeks working on an outfit you’ll only wear a handful of times 😉

I’ve been collecting couture/high fashion-y inspiration in a pinboard, naturally.

Or from here, where I could work with a new and challenging material (like leather!!) rather than more traditional couture techniques.

I realized, somewhat belatedly, that I could create my own reason to wear finery. That I have friends willing to play dress up, just for the hell of it, and a husband who would take me anywhere I wanted to go to show off my hard work.

Do you need a reminder that any day can be a special occasion? Look at those videos and dream with me.

  1. At the moment I’m wearing pretty much the same thing every week. So, I really should up my game and dress like everyday is special enough to dress and I think feel fabulous.
Theses videos are fantastic! I have so much admiration for these amazing artists and their work. Just imagine the hours or work that go into each creation and the number of hands that have touched each garment.
    Mind. Blown.

  2. My goodness! I didn’t want these videos to end! I loved watching each and everyone of those. Even though you don’t celebrate birthdays often, I think you should just because you can make a couture dress! I loved, loved your first couture dress!

I’ve made my first “couture” dress by following the craftsy course. I’m addicted as well. I never cared for hand sewing. Before, I tried to avoid it like the plague, but after my first dress, I find myself hand sewing a lot more. Before, I wanted to make a dress to blog, but now, I thoroughly enjoy slowing down and taking my time. Couture is so addicting!

I can’t wait to see your next couture dress! 🙂

  3. So much sewing porn! Wow. But watching that first clip makes me feel really good about how much I actually do accomplish – just me and my sewing machine without an army of specialists.

  4. Make a dress for an occasion or make an occasion for a dress? Either one works. Your couture sewing is beautiful – you don’t celebrate birthdays – make a dress and celebrate something else: you finished a dress, it’s Friday, a date with your husband, dinner/cocktails with friends, anything.

  5. ha sewing porn- I love it, that it certainly is. Just pure gorgeousness, it makes me want to pick up a needle and start sewing by hand. (and yes I want to order that beading tool to)

  6. Wow!!! That red dress!!!!! And I thought that the miniatures were time-consuming when I first saw them… that’s nothing compared to the gown! Wow!

You should do it up for your birthday! Make something special!
