Eleven years ago today

I became a mama! My oldest chickadee is a pre-teen!!! Something tells me I will need booze before it’s all said and done.

Truthfully, she is the most wonderful, kind hearted, sweet, well mannered, talented…well, it would take me all day and all of the words in the world to explain my little lady to you. I’m not just saying this because I’m her mom, anyone that knows her would tell you the same. The second week of school one of her classmates asked me if she was my daughter, when I said yes he replied “She is SO nice!”. It was so random and so funny.

I try to remind her daily of her brilliance and sweetness (and to a lesser degree, how the world doesn’t always appreciate people who are so) so that she may be armed to deal with the fools she will encounter in the future. She will start middle school in the fall. I’m hoping that she’s accepted to the school she interviewed for (have you heard of such a thing for middle school??? It was like applying to college!) where I think she will thrive and fit in.

She is the best child in the world to experience raising a teenager for the first time. My husband and I are SO glad to be her parents. Her great example has made bringing up the other three much easier. She is special and I love her!

  1. Children can truly be a wonderful blessing to us and really are what makes parenting so rewarding despite the trials and tests we face. It is most wonderful to see a parent rejoice and find joy in their children! Truly most wonderful!

  2. Happy birthday to your lovely daughter and congrats to you both! Your post brought tears to my eyes. My husband and I have a son, and he is not yet 2. It is so much fun watching him develop each day before our eyes, wondering how he will be when he is grown up 🙂

  3. My oldest has just turned 10 and I must admit, it was a bit of a wrench for me seeing him pass into double digits and knowing he won’t be my baby much longer! Your daughter is a lucky girl to have such a caring and devoted mum. Happy Birthday! x

  4. Yay, happy birthday to your little lady! She’s gorgeous (and sounds like a real winner)! Good luck and best wishes as you navigate middle school (gah, isn’t NYC the WORST in that respect– applying for MIDDLE SCHOOLS?! I hear about wait lists for preschools and I just shudder!) and other adventures! This was such a lovely post to read. 🙂

  5. Aw, she’s gorgeous! Happy belated birthday! I’ve read about applying to NY schools, and it blows my mind. So much for our small town stepping up ceremony.
