Damn Shorts!!

Damn shorts!!!

These are the first shorts I’ve ever made and I am having one hell of a time following Burda Mag’s lame ass instructions.

This fabric has a TON of stretch, otherwise I would have never been able to get into these. As it is, the back waistband needs about three inches taken in and I have decided to eliminate the front zip closure in favor of a back zip.

I have this same fit issue when I make skirts but I’m not sure what to do with these shorts. I would normally make darts on either side of the ones already included in the pattern, but it makes it sit weird on my (rather prominent) backside when I pin it in that way.

And the front is hitting high on my belly and the back is just barely covering my ass. This also happens when I make skirts.

First shorts

They look OK from the front…and with the waist covered. But I would like to wear them with something other than this baggy ass tank top.

What to do??

  1. try adding a waistband to them that’s higher in the back than the front and darting the back? i had that problem with the burda ruby shorts and next time i made them i extended the rise of the back by 3.5″ and the front by 3″ (but i did want high waisted shorts). then i needed to add darts to take in the waist to avoid the gaping waist prob. that worked for me….good luck!

  2. Wish I had some useful advice for you, but just wanted to chime in and say I feel your pain. I tried to make my first pair of pants earlier this year and the rear kept dipping below the front and the fit was all wrong in the crotch and thigh. Hours and hours of sewing and they’re still not right. Good luck!

PS Consider posting it in our Flickr group discussion board, I’m always amazed at the knowledge some of our sew-alongers have 🙂

  3. I hate the burda instructions!! They really suck. Great patterns awfull sewing explainations. I have had to make it up as I go often- or dispair and search out help on line. Kind of defeats the point I feel.

I hope you find a solution to your shorts- I am fighting with a pair of trousers and have a feeling they will be ten sizes too big. Ah, all in the art of the first pair! Somehow I think I might stick to dresses and skirts- but i shouldn’t give up so easily!!

Good luck with sorting out your shorts!
