Summer in the Wintertime

Summer in the Wintertime

Top :: Old Navy (from a zillion years ago)
Skirt :: Handmade
Tights :: F21
Boots :: Target
New Lipstick :: Revlon Super Lustrous in Black Cherry
New Blush :: e.l.f. All Over Color Stick in Pink Lemonade

I think of this skirt as a summer look. It certainly should be worn with bare legs, as it wanted to climb up my body even with a slip on. Even so, I was pretty comfy for the day.

Summer in the Wintertime

I’ve been all into Black fashion history, lately. I checked out two amazing works from the library. Both, unfortunately, deal with aspects of our history that are painful and difficult to read. Our major struggles (slavery, racism, oppression) but also relatively minor ones, too. Those that deal with expressing ourselves, succeeding and triumphing through all things. But, the books also hold many very positive messages and stories about self expression in spite enslavement/oppression/resistance and really celebrate and validate the right to express, and take pride in, our personal style and beauty.

There is this amazing new short film titled “The Door” from Miu Miu that brought black fashion history to the forefront of my thoughts. It’s directed by an incredible Black woman, Ava DuVernay, and stars Black women (Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Adepero Oduye, and singer-songwriter Goapele) wearing AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL clothes!

From Miu Miu:

The Door, by Ava DuVernay, the fifth Miu Miu Women’s Tale, is a celebration of the transformative power of feminine bonds, and a symbolic story of life change. The symbolic centre of The Door is the front entrance of the protagonist’s home. As she opens it to greet a friend in the powerfully framed opening scenes, she is shrouded in an oblique sadness. “In the film, characters arrive at the door of a friend in need, bringing something of themselves,” explains director DuVernay. “Eventually, we witness our heroine ready to walk through the door on her own. The door in the film represents a pathway to who we are.” Clothing is also a symbol of renewal, each change of costume charting our heroine’s emergence from a chrysalis of sadness. In the final scenes, she takes off her ring, pulls on long, black leather gloves, and walks, transformed by the emotive power of the clothing, through the door.

The existence of this film is in direct relation to the topics discussed in Black and Beautiful: How Women of Color Changed the Fashion Industry. It is still uncommon enough to have anything fashion related feature so many BROWN women that  watching this film feels like a victory. Ms. DuVernay has created a world as visually appealing as the clothing featured in it.

Those beautiful women look wonderful in those clothes.
They look beautiful on film.
They look at home in their luxurious surroundings.
They sell the clothing as capably as women of any color.
The number of women on the set of this film, contributing to its beauty, is a triumph for all women.

Cheers to Miu Miu for celebrating that.

Pride & Prejudice & New Kicks

Wearing one of my fave tees!! And the first new sneakers I’ve had in a long time. I really like them!! Best part, I’m footwear twins with my big girl! I’m so pleased that she still likes to match with me ;o)

#mother #daughter #sneaker day. She still likes to match with me. How long will that last??

She wore the shirt she made with it, too. It was the same outfit I choose in my mind when I saw these! My GOD, she has grown up SO much since that picture!

I’m wearing a new lippy, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable in “Smitten”, in the pics above. I took these after we’d come home from dinner at my MIL’s house, it’s usually a bit darker than it looks here. I brought it home in a nice small-ish haul from Target the other day. I was looking for a winter coat (my Fu*#$ng zipper is BROKEN) in February. You know, when they start putting out spring stuff. It was such a harrowing experience, I needed a pick me up, lol

#makeup #shopping at the #drugstore cause I'm fancy like that :0) @maybelline @askelf @revlon

Apparently, I need a class in gel liner application. I had very comical raccoon eyes after my first attempt with that little ass brush. I’ll have plenty of time to practice if the coming storm shuts the city down….I’d better go grocery shopping in the morning.

It’s still Sew Grateful Week, so I’d like to say, again, how awesome you all are! You’ve been leaving me such lovely comments on my posts! I love to read what you write and I love all of the quotes and book suggestions coming in! I’m going to put them in a post after the contest is over. Speaking of which…

Snow and new mitts go hand-in-hand like….tea and new mitts, lol!
It was nice to wear them to stay warm outdoors and get cozy indoors.
In other words, perfection!

Knockout Fingerless Gloves

I have my friends at Kollabora to thank for the yarn and the kick in the ass to knit ;P They get my vote as most awesome online maker community. Not because they send me things, but because they reached out to me personally during hard times last year. And sent me virtual hugs, along with you all, when I really needed them.

They’ve also featured me in their Meet the Maker series! It’s always so hard to talk about yourself….until you get going and realize you’ve written almost a 1000 words in your sleep deprived mania. LOL I’d be embarrassed if I didn’t how awesome everyone on their team is. What can I say, they ask great questions ;p

These boots might make me waver on my cheap shoe assertions from a couple days ago. These were only $40, are not real leather and the COMFIEST heels I’ve ever worn. In my life. I’m so glad I didn’t stick to my “no brown shoes” rule!! I have Pinterest to thank for swaying me from that opinion. I’ll be really sad when they reach the end of their cheap shoe shelf life. Hell, I’m tempted to get a couple pairs and store them for when that time arrives. I’m being completely serious.

I had a pretty great day. I got to see the inside of the new Barclays Center. For free. I took the kiddies and my teenage cousin to a college basketball game, there. It wasn’t the greatest. But, the weather was nice, we were out doing something and (luckily for me) I was with the five easiest to please young people in Brooklyn.

Bonus: I squeezed in a visit to my grandmother AND I found the perfect storm of location, lighting (nearly the best, this sweater is much brighter) and camera settings for indoor photos. Not a match for outdoor ones, but certainly better than some previous attempts!

I hope you all enjoyed your Saturday

Sweet Saturday

What I Wore :: 10.6.12

I had such an unexpectedly good day!! The weather was beautiful! It was the first day of Saturday class for my oldest two. My son is always so anxious when he starts anything and my daughter can be equally as nervous. I dropped them off, after a pretty painless commute, and occupied the twins while we waited.

They frolicked and collected leaves and twigs. We sat and snacked. They climbed all over this monument while I knit. Perfect diversion.

We picked up the other two kiddies, who were BOTH wearing HUGE smiles when we arrived, and went to visit my grandma (who was back home from two days in the hospital). My sister gave me a bag of, mostly tangled, booty. These gems were tucked away in this small bag.

Those bracelets are unbelievable in person!! I love my sister ;p

After visiting with my maternal fam, we walked over to see my paternal grands. I know, I’m lucky that everyone is so close together. We only spent a little while there before my dad dropped us home. I always appreciate a ride home. Getting sleepy people, myself included, home on public transport is the hardest part of going out with all of the kids alone. The twins would have been asleep before the bus pulled off.

Once inside, they started a leaf rubbing project (everything is called a project in my house) after eating some snacks. They’ve been playing quietly since then. After dinner, I expect a deep sleep to fall over the entire place.

Sweet Saturday

I was up at the ass crack of dawn (only 7am, but on 3hrs sleep {I was in the sewing zone making a true WINNER} it felt QUITE ass crack-y) to take my son to swimming lessons. The NYC Parks Department had a lottery for free ones, and I entered two of my kiddies. The other two weren’t interested and I was not in the mood to persuade them. Maybe next summer.

Anyway, we were up and out in record time, especially considering that I felt like I was walking around in a fog. My sister came with to keep an eye on the other three kiddos in the nearby park while he (WE) conquered a massive attack of the nerves poolside. All of this before 10 am only to get there and the lesson was canceled because there was too much chlorine in the pool.

We go back tomorrow for my little lady’s lesson. I have to get in with her due to her age. I wish I could get them into the same class, with them separated I have to be at the pool everyday for the next two weeks.

Oy, what a busy (and wet) way to end the summer.
