Pinterest Inspo :: Unexpected Brown

Today’s work look is quite unexpected and can be wholly credited to pinning things on Pinterest. I never thought I’d pair a black dress with black (opaque) tights. I NEVER thought I’d wear brown shoes again! And I CERTAINLY never thought I wear brown shoes with so much black!!

Furthermore, I never thought I’d like it so much!

What I Wore :: 1.15.13

I bought this dress on sale at Old Navy. I’ve had approximately forever and this is the first time I’ve worn it.
It always felt a bit short. With these super opaque tights, I felt really comfy in it.

What I Wore :: 1.15.13

I think I bought this belt, along with 4 or 5 others, over 15 years ago. This brown matches almost nothing in my wardrobe because I’m not a huge fan of the color.

These boots might be changing that.

This look is not a literal translation of any one thing that I’ve pinned. But I can say, with certainty, that I would not have looked twice at footwear this color if not for the stylish ladies on my Me Style This Look board!

Hello, all!! I should have worn this outfit to take the kiddies to school and to run an errand at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Collection room yesterday. Instead, I wore the t shirt I slept in and the nearest pants I could find to take the little three to school and then crept back home, whilst keeping my THROBBING head as still as possible.

You see, I had a migraine from HELL. It started the night before last and kept me up all that night and begin to really hammer by daylight. There were tears and some dry heaving. Very, very unpleasant stuff. I was in bed, in the dark lying very still, all day.

But today, I feel better. Here’s proof.

What I Wore 9.25.12

An extra cheesy smile! I was not fit to take a picture of yesterday. I could barely sit up. I did power through homework with the kids and an assignment I had due that night. I can’t rightly say I did so well on it considering that I could hardly think. SIGH.

Anyway, here’s a closeup of my blouse. Little ladies! With umbrellas! I love it!

What I Wore 9.25.12

During the wee hours of this morning, as I moped about my potentially bad grade, I started a new Pinterest board. I have one for style inspo and one for sewing related links, but I was starting to lose track of stylish things that I could make myself or find the ingredients for in my closet. So, this board was born.

Because I had nothing better to do, like get some sleep, I moved or repinned a lot of items from the style board to this one. I need more style help in cooler weather. Summer style is easier for me. I think this system will work much better for finding things I not only like, but want to wear and can thrift or make myself.

About the making aspect of this whole thing. I’m working on another post. It’s all about jacket fabrics. I had way too much fun draping them on my dressform earlier. I was a little punchy from lack of sleep and trying to stay awake, so it probably wasn’t really that much fun, lol.

Right now, I’m reveling in the sounds of joy coming from my living room. I went and bought a copy of The Avengers for the kids (and me and hubby, too) this morning. Somehow, I mainly blame Netflix instant watch options, we have a house full of die hard super hero fans. They look at this book everyday. The pages are falling out of it!

I’m off to make dinner while running on fumes. It’s times like this when I really wish I drank coffee and that caffeinated beverages didn’t give me the shakes, lol.

Till later!

My Style Mission

Reading this post over at Stylish Thought, brought to mind some things I think about often. There is no way that I will ever be the kind of woman that goes all out with her style each and every day. Some Most days, I just want to grab my jeans and a tee and go. No matter how much I love the look of high heels, I CANNOT WALK IN most of THEM, and I will NOT (and cannot) sacrifice my ability to walk for fashion (I have children to keep up with).

Despite that, I have granted myself permission (thanks, Self!) to mix my grab-and-go days with

Those are the days when I asked:

Will my style ever be as cute as Zooey Deschanel, Solange Knowles, Tracee Ellis Ross and all of those gorgeous damn women (Nikki, JasmineMarianne, Karla, Kendra) on my Pinterest style board???

I can reply:

Yes! Sometimes!

Those are the days when I will take my style queues from ladies who know better. When I ask myself “Self? Can I wear these prints together??”  Self will say back “What would Tracee say??”

Abso-fucking-lutely!

When I say “Self? Can my big hair be chic??” Self will reply “Look at Ms. Knowles!”

“Self? Does an arm full of bangles + the green beaded necklace= hot mess??” Self would say

“Stop asking me questions and go get dressed!!!”

The thing is, I’ve made this kind of declaration before. And it lasts a while. Then one day, I get dressed and feel…not like myself. And then I take off a necklace. Then a ring. And grab my jeans… I just saw this on pinterest and I think it sums up why I react that way.

I don’t think I am the kind of person who cares about her appearance. Or, I don’t think that I look well in a certain kind of look. I think that’s one of the main things that blogging and sewing so much this year and all of the great feedback you’ve given me has re-taught me.

You look good when you feel good.
You feel good when you feel confident.
You feel confident when you’ve applied yourself and accomplished something.

Hopefully, the changes I feel are permanent. I feel like they finally are.

Pinterest to the Rescue

Oh, Pinterest!! How I could wax poetic about thee! As I pointed out in this post, following people you love using multiple social networking platforms pays off! Meg the Grand, who could also be know as Meg the Babe just as easily, pinned this awesomeness earlier today.

How could she have known that I was stressing over next week’s 1940s challenge??? Did she use her special red-headed powers???

I’ve been worrying over what to make since I noticed the challenge. Though I think 1940s styles look great on others, I was more skeptical of it looking well on me. Also, I was not particularly in the mood to sew anything quite so bold shouldered, lol.

I know 40s style is more broad (PUN) than that. I’ve added quite a bit of inspiration to this pinboard.

Though I have found lots of lovely images of lovely ladies in fancy dresses and suits.

I’ve also found quite a lot of casually styled photos which have inspired me a lot more.

This slip made into a dress had its appeal at first, but I’ve been pretty set on making shorts for the challenge for a while. I was lucky enough to snag this pattern at the BurdaStyle sewing club meet-up.

Simplicity 3223

It’s from 1950, but the style of the shorts is keeping with 40s style.

I do have this 40s pattern, but I’m not in the mood for fiddling with collars and the pattern is also unprinted. I’m not in the right head space for that either. Steph’s T-shirt to the rescue!

Thanks Meg!

At my Frida inspired creations. Yes, you read that right. Creations!

These made use of two pattern books that I have in my library, one of which was used for the first time!

That’s all for now :0)

From Pin Board To Life

Several bloggers I follow have proclaimed their love for Pinterest (it IS awesome). Though since the new year has begun, many of those same bloggers have been lamenting the fact that the gorgeous things they’ve pinned have not been making appearances in their lives. This is true of myself as well.

There are even jokes amid the pins that say how much time is spent there decorating a house you don’t yet own, planning a wedding with no fiance and compiling lists of DIY and craft projects you will never get to.

So, on that note, here is my first installment of:

From Pin Board

To Life

Doily Jars

These are empty Prego jars that I rinsed with baking soda and dish detergent to get rid of the smell. The doilies are paper (I also used them in my New Year’s banner). They were $1 for 20 at Target (I am hopeless in the dollar section). The yarn is from the stash, two strands of Rowan Kidsilk Haze and one of a silk and wool blend yarn. They are doing a great job of holding my markers, pens and odds and ends!

Anything making the jump from pin board to real life with you all?
