This started life as size s/xs American Apparel tunic (or dress) that I bought my daughter for school, last year. I thrifted it for less than $10, but it’s not really her style, so it sat, unworn. To make it more Me-Styled, I chopped out the pockets, removed two little belt loops and the sleeves, then used them to make those sweet ruffled cap sleeves!!
I was motivated to, finally, refashion this top when I spotted this contest over on Kollabora.
What can I say, I’m very easily swayed by the use of the word manifesto. I was also interested in getting back to refashioning. I still have quite the stash of thrifted this-could-be-turned-into-something-great articles of clothing. This was a nice, easy, reintroduction.
And it is DEAD comfy to wear on those no tight clothes PLEASE days we sometimes have.
It also looks cracking with leggings, little booties and my kick ass cape (told you I can’t stop wearing it! THANKS for all the cape LOVE, btw!!) that even my husband keeps telling me I look chic in.
That super neat bun ain’t bad, either!
If you’re on Kollabora, give me some love!
To aid in getting back into my groove, let’s talk about winners!
The Scout Sew-Along Challenge Winners!
Taking part in this Sew-Along was a lot of fun! I’m so flattered and pleased by the positive feedback I received and the extra Scout’s in my wardrobe are pretty awesome, too!!
Check out the two amazing ladies that won the sew-along! Click on the photos for more details and click around Laglov’s profile to see the other kick ass versions she made! And Sally made more than one version, too. It was Scout fever over at Kollabora!
Laglov’s Tulip Scout
Sally’s Color Block Scout
Dudes. I really want to sew but it is SO HOT IN MY APARTMENT! We’ve always managed to get through the summer without an AC, but this year we might cave. It is brutal here in NYC. And the kids are stir crazy, so outside we go.
Wish me luck!
The Kollabora :: Sown Brooklyn Sew-Along ends today!!You have until midnight (eastern time) to Heart your favorite and upload your own!!
A knit Scout is
c. fucking awesome!
d. all of the above!!
Top :: Scout Woven Tee, Theory brand knit from Mood
Jeans :: F21
Shoes :: Old Navy
Headband :: Scrap from another Mood knit.
It’s safe to say that I LOVE IT!! In fact, I’ll be wearing it to work tomorrow ;o)
Don’t worry, it was worn for about twenty minutes to snap pictures. My little daughter is now the official photographer of the family! These are damn good pics for a 6 1/2 year-old!
I made this little headband/scarf/thing-y out of a scrap of fabric leftover from my Hummingbird! It was a sewing with stripes kind of night.
I’m so jazzed that the sew-along was such a success!! And I’ve been so inspired by all of the variations there! Dresses, two-toned, petal front, embroidered, lace, pleated! My neckline treatment was inspired by a version posted, there. It’s a teeny roll neck applied with Jen’s flat binding method.
And it is perfect! Lol
I left it un-hemmed because this fabric distorts like a sonofabitch. It behaved everywhere except the sleeve hems which I took in a bit after the fact. I ran a line of basting stitches about 1/2 from the hemline to (hopefully) discourage any unraveling, there. I cut this version using the same modified pattern I created for the Sunshine-y Scout tunic. This fabric was so wide, I might have enough for another cropped version, too!
Will I ever get tired of making Scouts?? The sewcialist world wants to know!
Okay, peeps. I’ve posted my Scout modification notes over on Kollabora.
Things are popping over there! With new Scouts coming out of the woodwork!
Jen even uploaded a series of KICK ASS KNIT SCOUTS!! Yes, that needed to be in all caps ;)
She also posted her thoughts on the different types of jersey knits she used, complete with links to the actual fabric! I just missed this info by a few hours. I was probably in Mood while she was writing the post. Thank goodness for the wonderful salesperson that helped me. She saved me from standing around like an idiot trying to make a choice.
I picked up a stack of knits for the Hummingbird Sew-Along and to try out a knit Scout. But my effing washing machine BROKE (*^*%*&%) so I have to wash everything by hand a bit later. I also grabbed some swimsuit lining from Spandex House. Which is a little creepy on the inside, I must say.
What do you think of the knit Scouts that Jen made? I love them! I need some more slouchy tees for this oppressive heat we’ve been having! I have so much sewing to do! I was so busy and beat these past few days, but I feel like my energy level has perked up.
Watch this space for some sewing!!
Top :: Scout Woven Tee
Skirt :: Advance 9916
Sandals :: Target
This time, cropped for some belly exposure. Well, more like ribcage exposure since you will NEVER see me in this top without something with a high waist paired with it ;)
I added little pleats to the sleeves rather than gather them. I think they look sweet!
I also made the hem a tiny bit hi-lo. What can I say, I really like that look with a woven tee! The curved lines at the side speak to me. I hope to get my thoughts (and photos) together to share how I modified this and the sunshine tunic version up on Kollabora.
I pointed this buggy out to the kids.
They had a teeny freak out when I let it crawl on my hand.
My childhood self also shouted “WTF!?!?!?” as I would never have willing let a bug crawl on me then, lol! Right after the little lady snapped this, it flew away and made them all scream!
Me and the littler three were on our way back from hanging out with Mikhaela and her crew at the sweetest little party! We don’t go to many b-day functions, but I’m so glad we did this time. We had such a nice time. And stumbled across the perfect place to snap a few pics.
PS- My husband told me I looked like a little kid, today! I think it might be the midi skirt length paired with flats, lol. AND This cropped Scout also marks the THIRD project I’ve squished out of this dotted rayon challis! Stash busting for the WIN!
It’s sunshine in garment form! Look at it gloooow with the setting sun hitting it!
Modified, a bit. Tunic-ish length, looser body, SUNSHINE-Y color!
Top :: Grainline Scout Woven Tee
Jeans :: F21
Sandals :: Target
Bracelets & Elephante Necklace :: from my Sissy
Jade ring :: my late granny’s
Making this nearly beat me. Started too late, had too much to do the last few days, the twins graduated today and the cloud of fatigue that hovered over me tried to take me down.
BUT I WON!!
You guys can win, too!! Jen and Kollabora have cooked up something good!! Check it out here!
And, for those of you new to sewing (are there any new sewists following this blog?) I’ve added more construction steps over on the Sew-Along page.
Hiya!! Thanks for all the lurve for my sleeveless Archer!! It’s so damn cold here today, I think sleeved and ruffled Archer might get some wear. Hmph!
It’s JUNE, DAMMIT WHERE IS THE SUN?!?! Ahem…
About the Sew-A-Long, I’ve posted some tips on choosing the perfect size and fabric for your Scout Woven Tee over on Kollabora.
So, grab a measuring tool, or four ;)….

It’s time to go stash diving…
And meet me at
I am so excited to be at the helm of Kollabora’s Scout Woven Tee Sew-Along! This is my first time *blushes*! It’s no secret that I think Grainline’s Jen is awesome!! Her design aesthetic fits in perfectly with my favorite things to wear. Of all of her patterns, Scout is my absolute favorite! Super easy to stitch up. Super stylish. Super easy to modify. Super easy to change up depending on your fabric. Super, super!
If you’d like to follow along, check in over at Kollabora!
We’re going to rewind on MMMay a bit.
This is MMM.D11
I wore my one of my Frida tunics, accessorized with humidity frizzed hair, to a friend’s graduation celebration on Saturday.
I was quite breezy and comfortable ;o)
I also wanted to direct you to my Me Made May guest post over on Kollabora.
I had so much fun writing about my April 30th/May 1st mixup, lol
Dudes, I have SO much sewing planned! Well, at least sewing related packages arriving! HA. By Hand London’s Victoria, Megan Nielsen’s Cascade and Tania, Mission Maxi (the last three were my Mother’s Day gifts ;D) and there are a handful (or two) of pdf patterns calling my name!
My fellow #sewcialist and I have decided that this is supporting women entrepreneurs and therefore totally acceptable!
